What Is Specialized Parent Training?

Sometimes children and adolescents with anxiety, obsessive compulsive, and mood difficulties, and many with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), display disruptive behaviors that can get them into trouble at school, make it difficult for them to make friends, and turn family life into a combat zone. As such, specialized parent training, often taught in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP)/exposure therapy, school-based interventions, or skills-based training, help parents rein in the problematic behavior and establish more positive relationships with their children.

As such, specialized parent training involve coaching parents in a series of behavior-management tactics to employ in their interactions with their child or teen to improve non-compliant or defiant behaviors. These tactics include increasing parental use of positive attention and other consequences with their children, the provision of clear guidelines, rules, and instructions, the application of swift, fair, and just discipline for inappropriate behavior, and the reliance on principle-guided parenting behavior more generally. With adolescents, parents and teens are taught proper problem solving skills and positive communicating styles during negotiations over conflict. During this training, parents learn how to gradually grant increasing independence to their teenager, distinguish negotiable from non-negotiable issues, and involve adolescents in problem solving for negotiable issues. Both parents and teenagers are to learn how to maintain good communication, develop realistic expectations of each other, and respect family structure.
