COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

contact us
OUR THERAPISTS HAVE EXPERTISE IN THE USE OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) AND WILL IDENTIFY AN INDIVIDUALIZED PLAN FOR EACH PATIENT

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
CBT is an umbrella term for structured and goal-oriented treatment that focuses on enhancing one's skills to overcome his/her emotional difficulties and problematic coping/safety behaviors. The key idea behind CBT is that what you think about affects what you do, which in turns, affects the way you feel. Sometimes, through no fault of their own, people get 'stuck' in vicious cycles - the things people do (or don't do) to solve their problems can inadvertently keep it going.

CBT is about finding out what is keeping you 'stuck' and making changes in your thinking and actions in order to improve the way you feel. It is a collaborative therapy and needs your active participation in order to be helpful. It is considered the "gold standard" for treating many psychological, emotional, and behavioral problems. Our therapists specialize in using this treatment and are committed to helping you learn the enduring skills of facing your fears, accepting uncertainty, and making effective choices.
Our therapists also practice various forms, specific interventions, and "offshoots" of CBT, including but not limited to:
  • Exposure and response prevention (ERP) / Behavioral activation
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness and self-compassion practice
  • Emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills
  • Behavioral interventions for repetitive behaviors such as trichotillomania and excoriation disorder
  • Executive functioning skills training
  • Communication and assertiveness skills training
  • Trauma-focused treatments
