What is Distress Tolerance and Emotion Regulation and What Do You Gain By Practicing These Skills?
The goals of distress tolerance include learning the skill of tolerating painful events, urges, and emotions and living a fulfilled life despite these painful events and emotions. Emotion regulation, on the other hand, involve learning to understand and identify one's own emotions, decrease the frequency of unwanted emotions, increase one's ability to cope with difficult emotions and situations, and manage extreme emotions. Emotion regulation skills help us change our emotions or situations. But when it is inappropriate or impossible to change emotions or situations, distress tolerance skills are there to help one cope and survive the crisis.
