What Is Supportive Parenting for anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is a parent-based treatment program for children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, and related problems. It is developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center and has been shown to be efficacious in treating childhood anxiety in randomized controlled clinical trials. Parents learn how to decrease family accommodations and increase supportive responses to their child's anxiety. Family accommodations (which include participation in a child's anxious behaviors and modification of a parent's own or family routines) though well-intentioned, inadvertently maintain a child's anxiety by promoting avoidance and maintaining the child's reliance on parents rather than developing independent coping skills. Family accommodation is linked to more severe child anxiety, greater functional impairment, and predict poorer response to CBT. In SPACE, rather than working with the child directly, interventions are focused on modifying the parents' behaviors, which in turn will influence the anxious child's behaviors.
